FREE - How To Lay A Stone Patio

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:33 pm

This stone patio was almost free. I received a 15 ‘ circle from someone who was replacing their stone. 2 tons of screening ($75) and 2 bags of sealing sand ($25). There was of course the back breaking labor but it is satisfying pain when you build something yourself. As you can see, I was not blessed with an elegant backyard oasis:

dsc02916

The old stones were pulled up, the sod peeled back and the whole area dug down to a 3″ - 6″ depth.  The land sloped down from the back of the house so I didn’t dig down very far on the outside. That area had at least 6″ of screening under the new stones. Once the screening is spread out evenly it has to be tamped down. You soak the area and bash the hell out of it with the tamper (you can rent one for less than $20)…it is a flat metal plate on a pole with handles on the side.

dsc02922

Once the area is thoroughly tamped (I soaked it several times and spent at least 4 hours on this) you start laying your stones, starting in the center and working your way out. Each course has to be carefully laid and checked for level. More than once I had to step back, look, adjust, and sometimes take up several stones and level the ground underneath. Once you have a good sized circle, a straight 2×4 around 5 feet long can help you level the stones.

dsc02925Once the stone laying is complete the patio needs to be sealed. There are many different products that can be used, and all are applied in a similar fashion. The sealing sand that I used was poured into all the gaps between the stones. I used a broom to gently sweep all of the excess off the stones and into every last space. Then I watered the patio using a fine mist. The patio was watered several times and allowed to dry. I repeated this process a few more times throughout the first summer.

dsc02961The end result was an almost professional job which took 2 .5  days. As you can see in the pictures, this is a townhouse so all the materials were carried through the house. On an accessible site, with all the materials at hand, this was a 1 man, 1 day, job. I had done this once before (helped someone 15 + years ago) so I had a little experience and the hardest part is definitely the labor. By the time you are half way through the job, you will officially be an expert stone patio layer, or at least, well on your way to becoming one.

I phoned around and got 3 quotes after I finished, just to see what it would cost. I was quoted $800 -$1500 for materials and no less than $1000 for the labor on any of the quotes. One of the quotes was actually $4000 for a 15′ circle kit like the one I built.

Thanks,

Mike

3 Great Thanksgiving Recipes

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:35 pm

mwff-logo1

Check out the following 3 recipes this Thanksgiving.  The Turkey and Yam recipes are great but a word of advice: if you make the stove top stuffing be sure to set some aside for yourself. The first time I made this I hardly got any. By the time I was finished all the serving and sat down at the table they were already into seconds.

The best stove top stuffing ever!

¾ cup dried cherries
2 -3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
4 tbsp butter
2 medium sized onions, chopped
4 ribs celery, chopped
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 tbsp sage, finely chopped
8 corn muffins (store bought)
2 cups chicken stock, plus some for reconstituting the cherries

Place cherries in a small bowl and cover with chicken stock for a few minutes until they soften. Heat a large non-stick skillet (or wok) over medium heat. Add olive oil and butter. Once melted, add the celery and onions, season with salt and pepper and cook until tender (10 minutes). Drain cherries and add them with the sage, cooking for 2 – 3 minutes, or until fragrant. Crumble the corn muffins into the pan adding chicken stock to dampen.

Turn heat down to low and keep warm until ready to serve.

Serves 8

Sweet Mashed Yams

¼ cup butter
2 tbsp 10 percent cream
1 tbsp maple syrup
½ tsp salt (or more to taste)
2 lbs Yams peeled, quartered lengthwise, and sliced 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch thick
Pepper to taste

Melt the butter in a medium pan, over medium heat. Stir in the syrup, cream and ½ tsp salt. Stir in the yams and reduce heat to low. Cover and cook, stirring often until yams are very tender (falling apart). Remove from heat and mash with a potato masher. Whip with a whisk until smooth, adding pepper to taste. Makes about 2 ½ cups, and can be made ahead of time and heated to serve.

Glazed Roasted Garlic Turkey

1 turkey 10 – 12 lbs.
1 tablespoon salt & pepper
3 heads garlic
¼ cup (50 ml) Diana marinade: Garlic & Herbs
1 cup (250 ml) HP Sauce (original)
1/3 cup (75ml) melted butter
4 fresh rosemary sprigs
3 fresh thyme sprigs

Preheat oven to 325 F (160 C)

Wash & prep turkey, sprinkle outside with salt and pepper.
Trim and discard the heads of the garlic, then cut each one in half, crossways.

Place the garlic in a bowl, drizzle with Diana marinade and microwave on high for 3 minutes until cloves start to separate.
Place 2 ½ heads of garlic inside the turkey with 3 sprigs of rosemary and the thyme. Place the remaining garlic into the neck cavity. (Add stuffing – apples cored and cut into quarters) Tie the legs and place in roasting pan, breast side up.

Whisk the HP sauce with the melted butter. Finely chop the remaining rosemary and stir in. Brush some of this sauce evenly over the turkey (save some to add later when basting). Roast for at least 2 ½ hours or until 170 F (77 C) registers on a thermometer inserted into the inner thigh. Baste often during the last 45 – 60 minutes. Let rest covered 15 minutes before carving.

Putting a price on free.

How much is free really worth to the average person? It sounds like an odd question until you look at how the word free is used. We are saturated by free, inundated by free, overwhelmed by free. So much stuff is free that I wonder how the heck  can anyone afford to stay in business and still give away so much for free? What about something totally free, delivered to your doorstep, ready to be used, consumed, worn, read, collected, whatever it is you do with it? What would that be worth? I think a little more of that would be a welcome respite from the endless barrage of commerce which blasts us with free offers.

Commerce makes the world go round and everyone has a useful product to sell. The problem is that everyone has to yell louder than everyone else to get noticed. That’s called advertising. Buried in all of that, there are free goodies to be claimed, but separating them from the products they are being used to help sell, is the hard part. Now I get to the point. What is it worth for someone to get all this free stuff that’s out there? If you want to dig it up for yourself you will spend hours searching and sifting through the false promises and free with the purchase of…offers. Who needs the frustration? Besides, isn’t your time more valuable than that?

I think that many people would pay a small fee for a monthly service that searched out genuine free items that were useful and valuable. It would be more than worth the time it saves, looking for all this stuff yourself. Well here is the really good news. We have waived the small fee and have decided to offer you all of this, wait for it…that’s right…Absolutely Free. aren’t you lucky?  ;-)

Free Now (pay later)

mwff-logo1

You can click on any of the links on our site and find a real freebie. You will not have to pay or be asked to pay but you might end up paying later. I test all of our links to ensure that you won’t be inundated with spam, have your name sold off to numerous marketers who will send you endless emails. That is not to say that the free offer site that you investigate won’t try to market to you. I would wonder if they didn’t. How else are you going to make money besides trying to sell to someone who has just visited your site. If what they have to offer is valuable to you, you might just pay later.

I have found out (much to my dismay) that the worst and most aggressive marketers are the ones trying to get you to “get rich quick”. I have been exploring many different methods to get the word out and advertise My World For Free. I have followed up on, signed up for, or subscribed to many sites that promise advertising to millions of opted in subscribers. All I get in return are vague promises and an exponential increase in the number beside my hotmail inbox every day. These additional emails are not “opted-in” by me and I would consider them unsolicited. I seem to spend more time “unsubscribing” to emails that I never subscribed to in the first place!

They will never earn my business. I do not need that kind of advertising because it goes against everything we are trying to promote. We want to provide a trusted site that will not send you anything you did not ask for. If all you want to do is look and consider then feel free. If you sign up for certain information then that is all you should receive. If you do not want further communication from a site, the unsubscribe should be easy, straight forward and honored immediately.

The free offers that I signed up for (that are listed on My World For Free) have never sent me an unsolicited email. I receive regular newsletters (really marketing emails but containing useful information ie - golf tips) but not spam email offers for products or services I have never heard of. If I did start receiving anything unsolicited I would contact the advertiser and advise them to stop and / or remove their listing from our site.

Crowfoot Glacier & Bow Lake

mwff-logo1

The crowfoot glacier is located in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. This awesome sight greets you 20 miles north of Lake Louise on the Icefields Parkway. The glacier has melted back considerably since it was discovered and named, but two of the three “toes” remain. The top toe is over 150 feet thick (as high as a 10 story building) where it runs along the ridge. The lakes in this region are a beautiful turquoise color from the limestone and mineral sediment from the mountains, carried by the glacial runoff in the summer months.

Mount Robson

Driving in British Columbia along the Yellowhead highway close to a ridge line that blocks your view, sets you up for this incredible visual surprise.  As you come around a sweeping bend on Hwy 16, the ridge on your right gives way to an opening between two mountains and in the middle sits Mount Robson. Mount Robson Provincial Park, the second oldest park in British Columbia’s park system, is truly one of the world’s crown jewels. The mountain for which the park is named guards the park’s western entrance. At 3,954 meters (12,972 feet), Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, towers over the lesser surrounding peaks. Winter or summer, this is one of the finest views in the Rocky Mountains. Just as the early trappers, hunters and explorers felt in awe at the mountain’s magnificence, travelers today experience the same feelings.  It was cloudy when we arrived, 1:30 pm, June 30th. This is a view of the mountain’s south face.

dsc05442

With Alberta’s Jasper National Park as its easterly neighbor, Mount Robson Provincial Park comprises a portion of one of the world’s largest blocks of protected areas. Designated as a part of the Canadian Rocky Mountains World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1990, Mount Robson provides everything from developed, vehicle-accessible camping to remote valleys that seldom see a human footprint. Mount Robson Provincial Park also protects the headwaters of the Fraser River. From it’s pristine alpine source, the Fraser River gains strength and size to match any of the world’s major rivers.

Flora and fauna are typical of the western slope of the Rocky Mountains, North Continental Range. One is able, on some trails, to travel between three different vegetation zones during a day hike. Over 182 species of birds have been documented in the park. All wildlife indigenous in the Rocky Mountain can be found here. Mule and Whitetail Deer, Moose, Elk and Black Bear call the lower elevation home while Grizzly Bear, Caribou, Mountain Goat and Mountain Sheep inhabit the higher elevations. With over 217,000 hectares of mostly undisturbed wilderness available, wildlife populations are allowed to ebb and flow with minimal intervention by humans

Vacation in the Mountains

mwff-logo1

It has been a while since I’ve posted. I have been very busy and also managed to squeeze in a little vacation time. I traveled to beautiful British Columbia and Alberta, home to the majestic Canadian Rockies. I must recommend a road trip along the Icefields Parkway to anyone who visits this part of the world. The Ice fields Parkway is a highway that runs from Banff Alberta, north through Lake Louise to Jasper. It runs along the some of the most breathtaking scenic views of mountains, glaciers and azure lakes and rivers found anywhere in the world.

The Parkway can be traveled in a single day, or you could spend a week and not see all of the sights and activities that this region has to offer. We spent 3 days, traveling in from Kelowna in the Okanogan valley. Our first night was spent in Golden, a few hours from the Alberta border and the start of the parkway. We spent a full day driving up from Lake Louise to Jasper, and another day in the Jasper area, and traveling out to Kamloops in British Columbia.

I will be posting travel blog pages with some of the pictures I took along the way.

The “F” word

mwff-logo1

THE F WORD

There is a 4 letter word that starts with F, and the censors don’t want you to see it!

This is such a terrible word that email filters segregate your emails if it contains this word. Your mail may not get to the person you sent it to, and be lost in a file with all the spam, junk and bulk emails. It is a terrible thing, but it wasn’t always this way.

Not too long ago, people used to be on the lookout for this word. It was often sought out and great attention was paid to the mention of it. Everybody wanted to see it. What happened?

Free is not a dirty word, but you would think that it is. Now you have to fool the system by writing f*ree or f re e or even “for absolutely nothing” or your email will be considered spam. It is a shame, but it is the way the world works now. Aggressive marketing has spoiled it for those of us that really do have something free to offer.

What do I have to do to get my message out? Should I invent a new word? From now on “fgriisk” means free. Now I just need to wait 4 or 5 years for it to catch on. A campaign of letters to educators, journalists and authors might help in getting people using my new word. Submissions to dictionaries might help. Perhaps I just need celebrity endorsement.

In order to solve the problem now, I am going to have to work around the draconian ban on the lovely word “free”. I will have to subtly use synonymous words and phrases in my emails to gently nudge people towards my website. Once there I can abandon all restraint and good taste, and shout for the world to hear: FREE FREE FREE! That felt good.

Introducing Mike’s World For Free

mwff-logo1

About Us

First A few words about free

The internet and human interaction within it, has evolved when it comes to business. Sure there is still dishonesty so we are ever vigilant (read suspicious) and more cautious than we are in the physical world. But what has really changed is the return of the true concept of marketing. With no boundaries, endless competition, and a completely even playing field, what marketing tactics really work become apparent.  This plays into the consumer’s favor because there is so much available for free, to see hear and play with (in limited fashion). This helps the consumer find exactly what they need.

The irony is that the best source of valuable free content is found on very successful commercial websites. These sites are designed to sell and they do it very well. The owners have literally spent thousands on proven sales copy writing in order to make you buy. Once you are on that site they are compelling you to read so they can cover all of your objections and convince you why you need their product or service. There is nothing wrong with that. Commerce makes the world go around, and this is doubly true on the internet. In the midst of all of this carefully calculated salesmanship, lies the valuable free offer. The free offer gives the seller the chance to showcase the quality of their product. It also affords an opportunity to gain the consumer’s trust which will help with closing the deal, down the road.

If you do go back and buy, then it is great for the seller and great for you. You have had a chance to sample the product, have hopefully compared it to other offers, and have found that it is what you need. If it fulfills your need and you purchase, you have obviously decided that the price is fair and you are receiving good value. In this scenario everybody wins.

The test drive

Aside from a few specialty buffs, nobody ever buys a car after reading some brochures and looking at it in the showroom. The test drive sells the car. The experience, the feeling, the ownership of it for a brief time, closes the deal. I think when you buy a house you should be allowed to stay overnight, maybe throw a cocktail party. How else are you going to know if you really want to live there? That would be a real test drive.

The beauty of internet marketing is in the test drive. Virtual products can be test driven for a limited time after which they need to be purchased.  Partial chapters of information, reduced quality graphics, limited functionality. It’s an electronic puppy dog close. You take it home and pretty soon you don’t want to live without it.

Wouldn’t it be great if life were like this…(I know the credit card company stole my thunder on this but I swear, I thought of this a year ago). Picture this: You are standing in the store looking at this incredible 50 inch plasma TV, and gazillion watt home theatre system. You want it, but the mortgage payment is already spoken for. They work out a nice payment plan that you can handle, but that price tag is standing between the TV and your living room. If that sucker was on your wall for 3 days (preferably on a weekend during the playoffs) and they worked out your payment plan while standing in your living room and preparing to uninstall the TV from your wall, you might feel differently about the price tag. I know I would.

That is why I LOVE THE INTERNET. If you are going to spend your money you can try out so much for free and find what you really want.

Free photos

I am constantly searching for interesting photos for use as screen savers, as illustrations for writing projects and even for the kid’s homework assignments. You can do a Google image search but you often aren’t getting the picture you want in the resolution you need. I hate when you find the perfect picture in the thumbnail on the search page and find that it is only a postage stamp sized jpeg when viewed “full size”. I started thinking that maybe I could rectify that in some small way. I would like to start a gallery of subscribers interesting photos to post. We could select our 5 - 10 favorites each month and let you vote on the best. They would be displayed in our “hall of fame” for the next month. Interesting or humorous tag lines are welcome.

I am taking a trip at the end of June to my native province of British Columbia, amid one of the most spectacular mountain ranges in the world. I intend to fill several memory sticks on my trusty Sony digital camera and create a travel blog for my readers at Mike’s World For Free. One of the outings I have planned is a 3 day road trip along the Icefields Parkway, which is an amazing scenic highway that runs from Banff National Park, through Lake Louise, north to Jasper National Park. Check out this link http://www.icefieldsparkway.ca for more information on what they call “the world’s most spectacular journey”.

To send us photos please attach with a description and send them to photoblog@myworldforfree.com . If you wish to include a link to your site or galleries please do so. We will check out all links for suitability (no adult, offensive or illegal content) and only require a reciprocal link in return. We are always interested in both providing and receiving free advertising, and linking to increase traffic. If it’s good for us, it’s good for you!

Thank you,

Mike
